Active and Passive Voive

Out of four sections in an exam Viz. aptitude, reasoning, G.K and English; English language has one-fourth weight age, which means yo can get marks equivalent to any other section in a least amount of time.

The level of English asked in competitive exams is of class tenth but due to its practical nature question are not that easy to crack.

Active and Passive voice is crucial as it checks your understanding of Subject-verb agreement and tense. So if you feel comfortable in Active and Passive voice you can attempt almost eight to ten questions in the exam without any hassle.



Active and Passive Voice
The places of subject and object in sentence are inter-changed in passive voice. 3rd form of verb (past participle) will be used only (as main verb) in passive voice. Auxiliary verbs for each tense are given below in the table:

Note:- Perfect Continuous Tenses do not have a passive form.

Imperative Sentence

If the given sentence in the active voice is in the imperative, to get the passive voice use 'Let'. 
Hence

Passive Voice = Let + Object + be + Past Participle
e.g. Active: Help me.

Passive: Let me be helped.

  • If the question in the Active Voice begins with a Helping verb the Passive voice must also begin with a suitable helping verb. Supposing the question begins with 'Wh or How' form (What , When, how.....) the Passive Voice must begin with the same.
  • If a sentence contains two objects namely Indirect Object and Direct Object in the Active Voice, two forms of Passive Voice can be formed.
She brought me a cup of Coffee. (AV)
I was brought a cup of coffee by her. (PV) (or)
A cup of coffee was brought [to] me by her. (PV)

  • Active: You will have started the job.

Passive: The job _______ started by you.
Ans. Future Perfect Tense (Passive voice) Auxiliary verb in passive voice: The job will have been started by you

  • Active: They had completed the assignment.
Passive: The assignment ______ completed by them.
Ans: Past Perfect Tense (Passive Voice) Auxiliary verb in passive voice: The assignment Had Been completed by them.


  • Active: Was he driving a car?
Passive: Was a car _____ driven by him?
Ans: Past Continuous Tense (Passive Voice) Auxiliary verb in passive voice. Was a car Being driven by him?


  • Active: I Help you.
Passive: You _____ by me.
Ans. is/are/am + 3rd form of verb (helped): You are helped by me.


  • Active: Does she make candles?
Passive: ____ candles _____ by her?
Ans: "Are candles Made by her?"

Structure: Is/are/am + object of the active verb (candles) + past participle form of the verb (made) + by + subject of the passive verb (her).
